Comprehensive solutions for business success

Company Information

ROM Communications Inc. (ROM) is a value added Internet Technology company focusing on web to wireless technology providing low cost high tech monitoring, tracking and remote control solutions for commercial, industrial and consumer applications.

Initially conceived as a R&D division of Total Telcom Inc. in 1998, ROM (an acronym for "Remote Orbital Monitoring") developed applications for the Environmental Services Industry using new wireless communication technologies such as Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites. This research led to the development of a communication architecture that would interface Low Cost "Wireless Data Packet" Technology to the Internet for real-world applications. ROM was incorporated in 1999 and has made these services available for industrial applications on a limited basis.

Products and services are based on the Corporations proprietary hardware and software platforms which incorporate various wireless satellite and cellular communications managed by the end user through the Internet.

Applications include Remote Monitoring, Tracking, Control, Data Retrieval and Asset/Product management. While these concepts are not new and many are commercially available today, the technology presently being used is expensive, complicated and reserved for large corporations and industries. ROM's initiatives with new wireless technologies coupled with an Internet based management system creates a whole new market for these applications.

Web to Wireless Technology

ROM Communications' "Web to Wireless" technology provides a link from a wireless device to a web based interface. By using technologies such as cellular networks, satellite networks, and Internet connectivity, ROM Communications is able to connect you to your data anywhere.

Low Cost

ROM’s approach of providing low cost high tech solutions means an initial low investment with reasonable operating charges (comparable to operating a cellular phone). ROM affordability makes Web to Wireless technology not only available for Commercial and Industrial applications but opens doors for small businesses and consumers to take advantage of this technology.

No Capital Infrastructure Required

ROM removes the burden from our customers of maintaining dedicated servers, databases, backup systems and specialized software (only a web browser is required). Interaction by customers with their own web pages provides the ability to control operating parameters and alarm points, examine and retrieve data, and control remote devices.

Ubiquity

Recognizing that people are not always “Online” and that many people may have limited or no access to the Internet, ROM’s products and services do not require Internet access to be beneficial to those who are "cyberly" challenged. Once set up, the user’s web page will interact with the primary server and deliver notification, reports and exception events directly to the user by e-mail, pager, fax, cellular and/or telephone.

Utility

Power Fault Trip Monitor

Overview

ROM Communications has developed a fault monitoring solution for monitoring power underground and aerial circuit over-current faults for utility or other providers. Using an optical sensor coupled to existing 3rd party devices, the device monitors the fault switch LEDs for error conditions. Upon a fault trip, the fault monitor wakes from a low power state and transmits a status message. This message can be tied to ROM's alarming system and web interface, or connected to the end user's SCADA system. By reporting the exact nature of the fault (specific phase/leg), deploying resources to respond can be achieved faster.

Hardware

The fault trip monitoring solution utilizes a battery powered system to provide reliability in a power outage, while eliminating the need for a more costly transformer siphon on the high-power transformer. The fault trip monitor is capable of running up to 2 years on a set of standard lithium batteries. The monitor uses an optical sensor to determine the state of the fault indication switches.

Data

The ROM fault trip monitoring system transmits a heartbeat status every few days to ensure the device is operating correctly. If a power event occurs, the device wakes up and transmits changes in the fault states. When an event ends, an all-clear signal is sent, and the device returns to its normal low power state. The system uses a cellular GPRS connection to transmit changes in state. Up to 12 fault trip switches can be monitored simultaneously per device. Data display is available through a web interface, or alternatively, connected to a SCADA system through a MODBUS TCP connection using a custom client application
